Two children with special needs - looking for advice on coping

I am a single parent of two special needs childdren. My son is 15 and is severly disabled.

He has CP, microcepaly, seizures, scoliosis, feeding tubes, asthma. I also have a 22 year daughter who is a twin who has MR.

Its hard to deal with each day knowing that I will be taking care of them for the rest of their lives. It's a lot of work, but they are what I live for.

I couldn't imagine life without them. They are my true pride and joy. even though I get depressed many days, I keep going or them.

Any advice?

I can empathize completely. I am so glad you wrote because so many parents are dealing with the day-in-day-out exhausting routine of caregiving, and feel quite isolated.

The most important thing to do is to somehow find a way to take care of your own needs as well - especially your mental health needs.

That means respite. You need to be able to have someone else who can carry the ball for you on a regular basis, so that you can stay healthy and happy.

And, as you said, this is for the long haul.

You also need to take action so that if there is an emergency, there is someone in place who can take over for you.

At some point, we won't be around for our kids, and we need to ensure that there are support systems in place for them.

The sooner we start, the better it is.

Good luck!

I am a special ed teacher and i share your frustration. I can only imagine how burdensome it must be at time. I hope there are other parents that you can bounce off some of the fears and frustrations on. Maybe also you can form a little group and discuss baby-sitting for each other. You need a little break where you can have some me time.
