Should you stop using your MacLaren stroller?

You may have heard about the MacLaren umbrella stroller recalls?

In researching this story, I found that some of the claims are a bit broad, and in fact may not mean that you need to panic about using your MacLaren stroller.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission received 15 reports of injury from the hinge mechanism on some of the MacLaren strollers. And, in 12 of those cases, the injury was severe enough that it resulted in a child's fingertip amputation.

To their credit, the MacLaren company issued a voluntary recall of all of their umbrella strollers sold in the US since 1999.

That doesn't mean you have to send back the stroller. MacLaren will be providing both retailers and customers with a repair kit, so that a cover can be applied over the problematic hinge.

This service is not currently available outside the US.

The recall is currently not applied to the special needs stroller series, Major Elite.

Although the site was down as at writing, the MacLaren information on this issue will be found at:

www.maclaren.us/recall

Saying thanks to teachers and special ed assistants

As the school year winds down, it's time to think about saying thanks to the folks who make it all possible.

Teachers that deal with special needs deserve a huge debt of gratitude. They're often put in situations that require great patience and understanding, and yet all too often don't have the resources or training they need.

But.... they manage. Somehow they figure it out, putting the needs of the students first, and very often going many extra miles to try to give students what they need.

And, let's not forget the classroom assistants - they make an enormous difference in the classroom.

It never hurts to say thanks and acknowledge the important role they play.

If you're looking for gift ideas, here's a suggestion for you:
