Picture Communication Symbols
Prompt Cards

picture communication symbol cards When should you use picture communication symbol prompt cards? There are times that this type of symbol communication has real advantages as an augmentative communication system.

In addition to the cost factor, the pcs prompt cards also can work to help students develop a deeper understanding of symbols as well. For instance, a graduated learning curve could go something like this:

  1. Learn about identifying and naming objects:
    - identify an 'object' and name it, e. Rufus (your pet dog)
  2. Learn types of objects, (also known as an object class)
    - identify an 'object' as part of a group (class of object), eg. Rufus is a dog
  3. Learn to identify an object by a symbol, at first a photo
    - identify an object from a photo - a favourite photo of Rufus
  4. Learn about other similar objects by comparing their symbols
    - identify the object from a group or series of similar photos eg. a series of photos of dogs, including Rufus
  5. Learn to identify and name any object that belongs that group (object class)
    > - identify any single photo of a dog as a dog, (including Rufus) ie. know the difference between dogs and cats, etc.
  6. Learn to identify more abstract symbols for objects, eg. line drawings
    - identify a line drawing of a dog similar to Rufus
  7. Learn to identify a group of objects (object class, eg. dogs) by line drawings
    - identify line drawings of other types of dogs

Most of us will go through this type of learning curve very quickly and not even notice it. But, for people with a disability, it's helpful to break down the steps so that we can slow down the learning process and get each step right.

Picture communication symbols are ideal for moving from step 5 to step 6 above. Moving from a photo realistic symbol to an illustration is actually a big deal. And it's an important step to develop a whole host of other skills.

For the best augmentative communication system, bear in mind that picture communication symbol prompt cards can never provide the types of advantages offered by custom photo communication cards, but for certain situations, especially school, picture communication symbols cue cards do have a role to play.

We looked around for a good package of pcs cue cards, and would like to recommend these to add to your augmentative communication systems. We like them because:

  • it provides cards for most daily living activities, including personal hygiene
  • illustrations are full colour - always easier to interpret than black and white, and more fun to use
  • cards are laminated: better for durability and helps with droolers
  • very reasonably priced
