Here's why we developed custom picture communication cards. What we found was that by giving our child a photo of our actual household items and meals he can tell us exactly what he wants - no more guessing. And for any child, nothing can replace the comfort that comes from knowing that your family is meeting your needs.
The choice cards are laminated kid-sized photos of any item your child uses in everyday life.
All you have to do is mount your picture communication cards on your fridge or wall, ensuring it is at the your child’s viewing height. A standard size poster board works great.
Whenever your child wants an item, they simply go over to the choice "board", and make a choice by pulling off the card and handing it to you.
We recommend you support his communication efforts by confirming his choice verbally and praising their efforts. You’ll love their smile of appreciation.
We’ve made this system as easy for families as possible. All you have to do is
take a photo
of the actual items your child uses, and send it us. We'll do the rest for you.
We'll send you a durable communication card, sized to fit a child's hand, for each photo. If you wish, you can have us add a description of the item right on the photo. This way your child will also become familiar with the written language associated with everyday life as well.
We recommend supporting your photo with a verbal description. Not only will this allow your child to learn written language, it will also help any supporting people know exactly what to provide. Just let us know in your e-mail or letter what description you’d like for each photo – we’ll add it right to the photo for you.
There is no end to the ways you can use your choice cards.
Think of sets for food and drink choices, clothing choices, activity choices, and entertainment choices (TV shows, movies, games, etc).
Don't forget to include things like bathroom breaks, bath time, teeth brushing, and other personal care issues.
You may also want to consider a set for the people in your child's life, so that they can tell you they want to visit, or that something happened at school, etc.
