Picture communication cards may be the single best solution if you have a child with learning or communication challenges. Without them, you know how difficult it can be to do even the simplest things. Mealtimes are stressful. Getting our children dressed is a major undertaking. And simply keeping them entertained with the movie or book they want can be a problem.

As parent of a child with cerebral palsy, I know exactly what you're going through. I‘ve been looking for special need products and solutions that help my child communicate for years. A complete, ready-to-use picture communication card system that really works - for you

Each card has a Velcro tab on it that attaches easily to the Velcro tabs on the display board. The cards used in the portable system don’t use Velcro tabs and aren’t laminated, but are ‘filed’ in protective pockets in the book.

All you have to do is mount the picture communication card display board on your fridge or wall. Make sure that it is at the correct viewing height - especially important for special need children. Whenever your child wants an item, he or she simply goes over to the board, and makes a choice by pulling off the card and handing it to you. You'll get best results if you have a display board close to actual use. For instance, you can have one display board in the kitchen and another in their bedroom, and still another in the rec room!

We recommend that you reinforce your child’s selection by repeating the word verbally. To help you do that, we’ll even add a written description – also customized with whatever you want -- on the picture communication card itself. Not only will this allow your child to learn written language, it will also help any supporting people know exactly what to provide. We'll send your laminated photo communication cards, sized to fit a child's hand, for each photo. If you wish, you can have us add a description of the item right on the photo - even in two languages. This way your child will also become familiar with the written language associated with everyday life as well.

On your first order, remember to order a Communication Card Display Board. We recommend using additional boards for each additional type of card, and for each location where the cards are used.

For instance, you can have one for food, another for movies, another for clothing, and another for ‘feelings’ cards. And don't forget to make cards for the important people in your lives too - including the professionals they see regularly.

We also recommend supporting your photo with a verbal description as well. Not only will this allow your child to learn written language, it will also help any supporting people know exactly what to provide. Just let us know in your e-mail or letter what description you’d like for each photo – we’ll add it right to the photo for you.
