What do I need to do to have custom picture communication cards for my household?

It’s easy. First take photos of the daily items that you want to communicate about – food, videos, music, clothing, and so on. Then, place an order for the number of cards you’d like. You can also choose the display board or portable card book. You can make payment online through Paypal. You’ll receive an email from us almost immediately to confirm the order, and provide instructions for sending us your images. As soon as we receive your e-mail with images, we’ll send you a confirmation e-mail. Within two weeks you’ll receive ready-to-use your custom picture communication cards along with your ordered display board or portable card carrier. picture communication card question 2.

What format can I use for my photos?

The easiest option is to send us digital photos by e-mail, preferably in the standard .jpg, .png or .gif format used by most digital cameras and photo processers. If you have another format, just let us know what it is, and we’ll accommodate you as best we can. picture communication card question 3.

What if I don’t have a digital camera?

The easiest thing to do if you don’t have a digital camera is to request a digital version of your photos from your film developer at time of processing. Almost all film developers now offer to put your photos on CD at time of development, which is the easiest and cheapest time to do so. It is still possible to have a photo transferred to digital after processing, but this is more time-consuming. If your local film developer can’t do this for you, we can work with photo prints as well, but we’ll have to charge extra for digitizing the photo first. picture communication card question 4.

What items should I have custom picture communication cards for?

We recommend starting off with things that are most commonly requested or offered today. Food and drink are among the best choices to offer with this system. We keep our camera in the kitchen, so that it’s handy to take photos of almost every type of meal or drink we offer. In that way, we can later choose a card showing exactly the meal he’ll receive, including the special utensil he uses. When he then gets the same meal on his plate in front of him as the meal on the plate in the photo, he’s happy because he knows he was able to communicate his choice correctly. We’re happy because we’re not making several meals just to figure out what he may want to eat.

We found that this is even more important with the drink options, since he sees his drink container on the photo and that is exactly what he gets, filled with the drink shown in the photo. Before we discovered the importance of personal photos, I used a downloaded photo of milk in a glass. He kept choosing that choice card, but was unhappy with what I offered him. Eventually I figured out that he wanted a glass, just like in the picture. But, he’s not capable of drinking from a glass, and needs a special container.

Entertainment options are another excellent use for picture communication cards. Before these custom picture cards, we used to lay out out sorts of video covers all over the furniture, and he would look at them to choose what he wanted. More often than not though, his lack of motor control meant that he was knocking all of the covers off the furniture instead – and we still didn’t know what he wanted. Now, he just goes over to the video card display board, examines the pictures of each video, and hands his choice to us.

Clothing choices are another great use for picture communication cards. Ideally, take a photo of the clothing item while he’s wearing it. Alternatively, we recommend taking the photos of clothing choices using his bed or room as background, so that he can make the personal connection. Don’t forget to include shoes, socks, pyjamas and outer-wear too.

Favourite toys and games are also likely to become favourite picture communication cards. And don’t forget to create picture cards for any special equipment that is used, such as a walker or wheelchair.

There is no end to the ways you can use custom picture communication cards. If there is a choice that can be made, then there is probably a good use of custom picture cards. picture communication card question end page 1.
