Frustration with parents - inclusive education

by Zeeba
(New Mumbai , Maharashtra , India)

I am a special educator working for one of the prestigious Inclusive School in India. My frustration heightens when i am unable to communicate with the parents the necessity of functional rather than academics .

For the past two years I have a child with downs . Since the mother is extremley ambitious and highly successful she simply cannot understand the necessity of the Child's priority in life .

It makes me mad that at a times I have to give in and concentrate on academics with her rather than the better option for the child.

I'm on the opposite side of the fence though. I am a parent of a fairly high functioning child with autism. I believe for him some acedemics are important, however he is not strictly a paper, pencil, classroom child. I believe functional skills are just as important if not more important at this time. He is not thriving as well as he could be within the school system, because they don't have the kind of programming or flexibility that he would clearly benefit from. I am considering pulling him out at the end of the year, and home schooling. Working with a non resident board that can help build a program around him, getting him the kind of education he needs.
