AFO shoes for unsteady walkers
by Anna
(The Special Life)

This is an ongoing problem for us, but we just recently found a pair of shoes that work perfectly so we wanted to pass it on....
This shoe has high ankle support that goes a long way to help with an unsteady gait. It also has velcro straps that make it very easy to put the shoe on and take it off.
It also means that the shoe opens up fairly wide, and so should help accommodate an AFO. (We haven't needed that yet though)
And, best of all, the placements of the Velcro straps mean that the shoes stay on his feet, even as he places his feet in odd arrangements or drags them.
The base of the shoe is also solid and provides good support for his attempts at walking with the assistance of a walker or person holding him.
The straps are well secured, so they should hold up well. We're very happy with both the design and quality of the shoe.
If you're like us and have a child with cerebral palsy, you may have a huge problem trying to finding appropriate shoes that will stay on their feet, or shoes that can accomodate their AFOs (ankle foot orthotics).

I was so excited to see that one brand now has a whole selection of shoes and boots with velcro that will meet our need for AFO's.
When you click on the blue shoe image above, you'll see the selection that I've found for you, and I hope that you'll find a pair that works for you.
Hope that helps!
