My name is Anna and I'm the mother of a young child with cerebral palsy. My family and I have been adjusting to having a special need child for many years now. We've been pretty lucky, and had some great people to help out our son.
But, when it came to figuring out how to adjust all the little things in getting through your day, we pretty well figured things out on our own. There isn't any support system for families - just for the child.
So we've been figuring it out as we go. There are a number of little things we created along the way to just make the day move more smoothly. When our second son came along, we realized that he was able to benefit from those things too.
A number of people who visited us kept saying that we need to get out there and tell others about what we've done - especially with the communication cards. After hearing it often enough, I decided to check into it.
I wanted to be able to provide information - quick tips and leads to information you can really use - to other families who are also dealing with special needs.
But, of course, I needed a way to do it that would be effective, but still reasonably priced and as easy as possible to develop and maintain. Being time starved is nothing new in our society, but when you also have to factor in extra time to do *every* single daily task, just getting through the day is exhausting.
If you're the parent or sibling of a special need child, then you probably know what I mean. Chances are good that you don't have a lot of extra time. Or money. Believe me, we can relate.
Since I had already done a lot of work with technology in my career, having a web site seemed like an easy way to go.
I had never had a website before, but have worked with the internet and with technology development in general for a long, long time in my previous LBK (ie. Life Before Kids) I knew enough to know that it is never as easy as it looks when done. I also knew that the biggest headaches often come from trying to integrate different programs to get the result you need. So, one of my priorities was to find something that offered a package of services. The last thing I wanted to do was always spend my time just upgrading, learning and integrating little bits and pieces of software. I really want to be able to spend my time finding good information, using it and then passing it along to others.
It took a while, but I finally found what I wanted - a package that allows me to focus my attention on building a website that really works for both me and for my site visitors, rather than just learning a bunch of html code.
One of the key features that impressed me is that it is written in understandable language, not techie-speak. That made things a lot easier. And, unlike any other website building tool, it speaks to the heart of website - how to provide good information, and how to do it in a way that the website not only pays for itself, but can generate an income.
It may well be that this is a method that will work for you too, after all we can all use some extra money, right? If you think you may be interested, you can see what I mean for yourself by watching this video....
I hope this gives you a good idea of where we're coming from and how we got here.
And hopefully, it will give you some ideas on how to move beyond your special circumstances too.
